It shares a border with Cambodia to the east, Laos to the northeast, Myanmar to the west, and Malaysia to the south. Thailand has become the most popular tourist destination in South East Asia. Commonly known as a land of smiles, it has something for everyone starting from its powder-white shimmering beaches, bustling cities, exotic island hideaways to glittering temples, saffron robed monks and colorful hill tribes. It is visually stunning and sums up quixotic images of Asia which are gilded temples, lush paddy fields, exotic foods and gracious, smiling people.

One of Thailand’s best known resorts is Pattaya. Once a small fishing village, Pattaya is now a vibrant city boasting a huge variety of hotels, leisure activities, restaurants and entertainments. Sporting prospects are almost limitless, on land or sea. Golfers can enjoy some of the best courses of Southeast Asia here, and water sports enthusiasts are spoiled for choice, with diving, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and fishing. Thailand’s western gulf is also blessed with superb beach resorts. Among the most popular of these is the historic town of Hua Hin. It is ideal for strolling, along a lengthy sand beach and through the town with its many restaurants specializing in fresh seafood.
In southern Thailand, the island of Phuket has become one of the region's best-loved holiday destinations. With splendid beaches and superb hotels, its popularity is not surprising, especially as the clear, blue waters and golden sands contrast so vividly with the lush green forests that covers its inland hills. Phuket's scenic beauty stimulated the development of excellent resorts, mainly on the sandy bays of Patong and as well as fine hotels, shopping and every type of water sport.
Another place to go to is the province of Krabi and Trang located east and south of Phuket. The place are winning international recognition for their great natural beauty and expanding tourist facilities. The coasts here are composed of secluded bays of fine sand and clear waters, blacked by spectacular cliffs, while marine national park are protected by countless offshore islands. Inland lies a wilderness of rugged mountains also preserved as national parklands, with virgin rain forests, tumbling waterfalls and mysterious caves to be explored. Koh Samui located in the eastern side of southern Thailand is, now rivaling Phuket's popularity as an escapist paradise, not so far offshore from the lively small fishing port of Surat Thani. Samui itself is covered with huge plantations of coconut palms which give the island its name.
